A turbine oil centrifuge is a continuous disc stack separator that removes free water and fine solids from turbine lube oil, typically in a kidney loop off the reservoir while the turbine stays on line. Dolphin Centrifuge builds these systems in Warren, Michigan around remanufactured Alfa Laval centrifuges and supplies centrifuge systems to utilities and power plants, including nuclear and gas-fired plants. Dolphin is an independent remanufacturer and is not affiliated with Alfa Laval.
This page covers the machines we use, what each one handles, the options that turn a bare centrifuge into a plant-ready skid, and what documentation and warranty come with it. For the general lube oil background, see the lube oil centrifuge page.
Why Turbine Oil Needs Continuous Centrifugal Purification
Turbine oil picks up condensate through gland seals, and oxidation products build up through years of hot service. Water also gets in from cooling system leaks, and sludge particles come from wear on moving parts. Both water and solids are what a centrifuge removes best.
Water is the bigger concern. The smallest quantity of water in lube oil can do real damage to expensive equipment such as gas turbines, and gas turbine manufacturers require the lube oil to be free of all water. Filters remove only the solids. They do not take out all the water, and the elements clog and lose flow as they load up.
A disc stack centrifuge works differently. It spins the oil at over 6,000 Gs, so free water and solids separate in one continuous pass, down to about 0.5 micron. There is no filter media to buy or change. Clean oil leaves from the center of the bowl, water leaves through a separate outlet, and the solids collect on the bowl wall. Because the flow does not degrade, the centrifuge can run around the clock beside the turbine.
- Moisture after the pass: from the 500 ppm level to 1500 ppm or higher. Lower flow at higher temperature gives drier oil.
- Temperature: steam turbine lube oil separates best at around 150 F.
- Varnish: a centrifuge removes the insoluble oxidation particles and soft contaminants that later settle out as varnish deposits. It does not remove products still dissolved in the oil, so it is used alongside varnish removal media, not instead of it.
Which Machines, and How Much Oil They Handle
Small steam turbine sumps are served by the manual-clean Alfa Laval MAB machines. We also build small lube oil centrifuges on mobile carts to move between turbine lube oil sumps in power plants. Larger reservoirs move up to the self-cleaning MOPX and WHPX machines, which eject their own sludge, so no one has to open the bowl on a schedule.

Rated flow on steam turbine lube oil, centrifuged at 60 to 70 °C, from the OEM capacity tables. A different oil grade, viscosity, or temperature changes the number, so every capacity here is tied to its fluid.
The 110 V single-phase option on the MAB 103 suits a small portable cart. The same machines also run fuel oil, which most power plants burn or store, and hydraulic oil. See the fuel oil centrifuge and hydraulic oil centrifuge pages, or the oil centrifuge overview.
System Options
A bare centrifuge is not a plant system. Dolphin mounts the centrifuge, heater, pump, and controls on one skid and wires them to a single panel, so site work is limited to connecting utilities and piping.
- Heater: pre-heating lowers oil viscosity and raises separation efficiency. We supply electric immersion heaters (3 to 60 kW) and steam heat exchangers, sized from your flow rate, oil, and available utilities. See fluid heating systems.
- Pump: a positive displacement feed pump with VFD control and flow indication.
- PLC and touchscreen: automatic start sequencing, alarms, vibration monitoring, data logging, and SCADA integration. The standard platform is AutomationDirect CLICK PLUS with a Maple Systems HMI. We also build on Allen-Bradley or Siemens to match plant standards. See centrifuge controls.
- Stainless steel: all-stainless centrifuges are offered where the oil or the environment calls for them. See stainless steel centrifuges.
- Explosion proof: Class I Division 1 and Division 2 systems are offered. The classification follows the location of the machine, not the oil. Direct drive replaces the friction clutch to avoid sparking, and nitrogen purge is available. See explosion proof centrifuges and explosion proof stainless steel centrifuges.
Reliability, Testing and Documentation
Every remanufactured Alfa Laval centrifuge from Dolphin is inspected, has every seal, gasket, friction pad, bearing, and fastener replaced, and is vibration-checked and balanced as needed. Frame parts are sandblasted and finished with two coats of epoxy. The full list is on the reconditioning standard page.
- Test run: a full test run at rated speed before shipment, on a surrogate fluid (hydraulic oil or water). Running amps and performance are recorded on every unit.
- FAT report: a signed Test or Factory Acceptance Test report is available on request (additional charges may apply).
- Warranty: 12-month mechanical warranty covering defects in parts, materials, and workmanship from the date of delivery, as specified in your formal proposal. Standard exclusions apply (wear and consumable items such as seals, gaskets, friction material, and bearings).
- Support: ongoing technical support, available to the original purchaser, for the life of the machine.
- Package documents: where a project needs them, GA drawings, P&IDs, SDRL and VDRL submittals, ITP, FAT records, and an O&M manual. See EPC industrial centrifuge systems.
This describes our general standard. Actual scope is defined in your quote, and the Warranty and Terms document that accompanies every proposal governs each sale.
Repair and Overhaul of Plant Centrifuges
Many plants already own a self-cleaning centrifuge that has run for years. Dolphin repairs and overhauls large self-cleaning centrifuges, and a recent single-machine repair order came to $60,000. That is an example of the scope we take on, not a standard price. The cost of any job depends on the machine and the wear we find when it is stripped down.
A major overhaul replaces the bearings, friction pads, seals, and gaskets, cleans the disc stack, inspects the gear train, and ends with a test run. Manufacturers recommend a major service every 2 to 3 years, and a complete overhaul of a large self-cleaning machine can take four weeks or more. Older timer-based machines can also be upgraded with a PLC and touchscreen and a direct drive with VFD. See industrial disc centrifuge repair.
Sample Testing
If you are unsure what your oil will do, send a sample. We test it with a lab-scale disc stack centrifuge and report the separation. Sample testing is a chargeable service. Tell us the oil grade, the operating temperature, and the contamination you see, and we will tell you what to send. See industrial centrifuge sample testing and the sample testing case studies.
